  • Head height as fraction of frame: approximately 64%-72%
  • Head position: Directly facing camera; head upright, no tilt or rotation
  • Shoulders: Square to camera and centred

Background

  • Color: Plain white
  • Requirements: No shadows, no texture, no patterns, no border, and no objects behind the subject

Expression

  • Neutral expression, mouth closed
  • Both eyes open and clearly visible
  • Look directly at the camera

Accessories

  • Eyeglasses: Avoid glasses; if worn, the eyes must be fully visible with no glare
  • Sunglasses / tinted lenses: Prohibited
  • Head coverings: Avoid unless required for religious or medical reasons; the full face must remain visible
  • Hats / non-religious head coverings: Prohibited

Other rules

  • Use a recent, unaltered color photo
  • No filters, retouching, or beautification
  • Lighting should be even across the face and background

Notes

  • Hong Kong uses a larger 40 x 50 mm print format, not the 35 x 45 mm passport size used by many nearby jurisdictions.
  • The 32-36 mm head-height band means the head occupies a slightly smaller fraction of the frame than in 35 x 45 mm passport crops.

Can I wear glasses for a Hong Kong passport photo?

Avoid glasses if they create glare or hide the eyes. The eyes and face outline must remain clearly visible.

Can I wear a head covering?

Do not wear hats or ordinary head coverings. If a religious or medical covering is required, keep the full face visible.

What expression should I use?

Use a neutral expression with mouth closed, both eyes open, and the face looking directly at the camera.

How recent does the photo need to be?

Use a recent, unaltered color photo that reflects your current appearance.

What dimensions should I use?

Use a 40 x 50 mm color photo on a white background. The generated digital output is 472 x 591 px.

The same checks the authority will run — before you submit.

  • Face height & eye line measured from the pupil midpoint with sub-pixel accuracy, clamped to the tolerance range your authority publishes.
  • Background colour checked across a sampled grid — catches gradients and fringe from poor segmentation (ΔE < 3 against spec).
  • File-size ceiling enforced per-spec — recompressed silently for sub-60 KB e-visa portals, lossless for print.
  • Sharpness & expression guards warn on blur, closed eyes, or non-neutral expressions before you export.
