Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 13, 2026
SpecSnap is developed by an independent developer. This policy covers the mobile app, specsnap.app, and the browser photo tool at web.specsnap.app.
Photos and Image Processing
All photo processing — face detection, background removal, cropping, and export — happens entirely on your device. SpecSnap does not upload photo bytes or face measurements to its servers, analytics services, or crash-reporting services. Downloading the website or on-device models still makes network requests. Saving or sharing a photo sends it only to the destination you choose.
Face Data
The mobile app uses Google ML Kit and the browser tool uses MediaPipe for on-device face detection. Depending on the tool, detection measures:
- The face bounding box and eye positions (used to align and crop the photo to government ID specifications).
- Head pose angles (used to correct slight head tilt).
- Eye-open and smiling probabilities in the mobile app (used to validate photo quality).
SpecSnap does not create face embeddings, perform face recognition, or use these measurements to identify you. They are geometric crop coordinates and quality signals.
Processing location. All face detection runs on your device using on-device ML models. SpecSnap does not send face measurements to third parties.
Mobile retention. Local History stores the cropped photo and, when available, a reusable source photo and face geometry (face bounds, eye positions, and crop measurements). This lets you reuse a saved photo for another document. These files survive closing or restarting the app. History keeps up to 30 entries; older unpaid entries are removed first, then the oldest remaining entries if needed.
Deletion.Open a photo in History and choose Delete to remove its cropped photo, reusable source, and saved face measurements from app storage. Uninstalling removes the app’s local data. Copies you exported to your photo library, shared elsewhere, or retained in device backups are managed separately by you and your operating system or backup provider.
Browser retention. The browser tool keeps your working photo and measurements in the current page session. Refreshing or closing the page discards that working session. Downloaded photos remain wherever you save them.
Local Preferences and Usage Analytics
No account is required. The mobile app stores preferences, purchase entitlements, credit counts, and History metadata locally. Configured releases also support the following telemetry; builds without the relevant service configuration do not send it.
- Mobile usage analytics. When enabled, PostHog receives usage events such as photo selection, processing outcomes, and exports, along with app version, platform, language, selected document/country, durations, and validation categories. Its SDK uses an anonymous installation identifier and device/session metadata. We do not identify you by name or email, create person profiles, or enable session replay. Photos and face measurements are excluded.
- Mobile analytics control.Usage analytics are enabled by default in configured releases. You can turn them off or back on in Help & Privacy using Share usage stats. The preference is saved on your device; turning it off stops new usage events and resets the SDK’s anonymous identifier. It does not delete events already received by PostHog.
- Website and browser analytics. When configured in production, specsnap.app and web.specsnap.app use Google Analytics for page views and usage events. Browser-tool events include document/country, language, processing duration, error categories, downloads, and purchase value/currency. Google Analytics may use cookies and browser/device metadata. The mobile analytics switch applies only to the mobile app; browser privacy settings or content blockers can restrict web analytics.
- Network metadata. Website hosting, model downloads, analytics, crash reporting, and payment providers receive network metadata such as your IP address when your device connects. Local photo processing does not prevent those network requests.
Crash Diagnostics
Mobile releases configured with Sentry send crash and error diagnostics separately from usage analytics. Reports can include error messages, stack traces, diagnostic breadcrumbs, app/OS/device details, and language/document tags. Sentry reporting remains active when the usage-analytics switch is off. We disable default personal information, screenshots, screen recordings, and performance tracing, remove user objects, and redact common device-storage paths. We do not attach photos or face measurements. Diagnostic messages can still contain technical context about an error.
Service providers handle received data under their own policies: PostHog, Sentry, and Google. Turning off future collection does not erase previously received records. Contact us with questions about those records.
In-App Purchases
The mobile app offers purchases on iOS (processed by Apple’s App Store) and on Android (processed by Google Play’s billing system). Payment information is handled entirely by Apple or Google — SpecSnap does not collect, store, or have access to your payment details. Apple and Google retain a record of your purchase (purchase history) under their own privacy policies; see Apple’s Privacy Policy and Google’s Privacy Policy for details. The mobile app stores entitlements, credits, expiry dates, pending-purchase state, and whether a saved photo is paid locally.
Browser purchases are processed by Polar. Polar handles checkout information, including payment and contact details, under its Privacy Policy. SpecSnap’s checkout server exchanges checkout identifiers with Polar to verify payment. The browser tool stores an entitlement cookie for up to 90 days; clearing it removes the browser’s unlock state. No photo bytes are included in checkout requests.
Camera and Photo Library Access
SpecSnap requests access to your camera and photo library solely to capture or select photos for ID photo generation. These permissions are used only when you initiate the action (taking a photo or choosing from your gallery). SpecSnap does not access your camera or photo library in the background.
Children’s Privacy
Parents or guardians may use SpecSnap to create ID photos for their children. Those photos and their face measurements are processed locally under the retention rules above. We do not request children’s names, ages, or accounts. Usage analytics and crash diagnostics follow the same configuration and controls described above; usage analytics can be disabled in the mobile app’s Help & Privacy.
Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be reflected by updating the “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the App after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
