Passport offices use live photo capture. MyOnline Pasport renewal accepts uploaded photos but rejects AI-generated or AI-modified photos. AI processing is unavailable here.
For children under four or applications overseas, check the receiving office’s photo instructions. The online portal allows formatting edits; follow its current upload requirements.
Dimensions
Choose your application route first. Passport offices use Facial Live Capture. MyOnline Pasport is an online renewal route with a photo upload. JIM’s published exception for children under four asks for one 35 × 50 mm white-background photograph. Follow the receiving office’s instructions for overseas applications; do not assume the same print count or dimensions everywhere. There is no verified universal pixel, DPI or file-size rule across these routes.
Head position
Look straight at the camera with the face unobscured. For JIM’s under-four supplied-photo exception, the published face height is 25–30 mm, or 50–60% of a 50 mm photograph. This is a child-specific requirement, not an adult crop percentage.
Background
MyOnline Pasport requires a white background without shadows. Wear dark clothing covering the shoulders and chest. Use a naturally suitable background; do not replace it with AI.
Expression
Face the camera with eyes open and mouth closed. Follow the office’s capture instructions or the online portal’s example photographs.
Accessories
JIM’s live-capture instructions prohibit glasses and contact lenses. MyOnline Pasport also prohibits face, ear and head accessories. A hijab must be dark, plain and leave the face visible. Hair and head coverings must not obscure the face or forehead.
Other rules
MyOnline Pasport requires a photograph taken within one month and rejects photographs generated or modified with AI. Its additional upload information permits formatting edits using a third-party editor and warns against mirrored images. That permission does not authorize AI generation or AI retouching. Check current eligibility and upload requirements directly in the portal.
