Dimensions

  • Print size: 35 x 45 mm (3.5 x 4.5 cm)
  • Pixel size: 413 x 531 px at 300 DPI (827 x 1063 px at 600 DPI)
  • DPI: 300 DPI minimum; 600 DPI recommended for digital submission
  • File format / max file size: JPG, JPEG, or PNG; max 120 KB
  • Borders: none (borderless)
  • Color mode: color only — no black and white

Head position

  • Face height (chin to crown): 70-80% of photo height (~31.5-36 mm)
  • Head height (chin to top of hair): ~34.5 mm
  • Distance from top of photo to top of hair: ~3 mm
  • Eye line from bottom: 56-69% of photo height (~25-31 mm)
  • Orientation: full frontal view, head and shoulders centered, facing camera directly

Background

  • Color: white or off-white
  • Plain, solid; no patterns, prints, or shadows on face or background

Expression

  • Neutral expression — no smiling, no frowning, mouth closed, no teeth visible
  • Eyes open, clearly visible, looking directly at camera; no red-eye
  • Hair must not cover facial features; ears ideally visible
  • Clothing: avoid light colors that blend with the white background; no logos, text, or uniforms

Accessories

  • Glasses: should be removed. If worn, frames must not obstruct the eyes and lenses must be glare-free. Best practice: remove entirely.
  • Head coverings: not permitted except for documented religious or medical reasons; must not obscure facial features

Other rules

  • Recency: taken within the last 6 months
  • No filters, retouching, or digital alterations
  • Quantity (print application): 2 identical photos
  • Children under 6 are exempt from the strict gaze/expression rule; infants under 3 may have an open mouth
  • One subject per photo — no other people or objects in frame

Notes

  • Thai MFA shares the 35 x 45 mm format with embassy/consulate visa applications (th_visa); the digital portal (th_evisa) uses a much smaller 132 x 170 px format with a light grey background.
  • The 120 KB ceiling is the upload constraint observed across MFA and aggregator portals; some embassy print counters accept the full-resolution 600 DPI file.

Can I wear glasses in my Thai passport photo?

Glasses should be removed. If worn, frames must not obstruct the eyes and the lenses must be glare-free. Removing them entirely is the safest practice.

Can I wear a head covering for the photo?

Head coverings are not permitted except for documented religious or medical reasons, and even then must not obscure facial features.

Can I smile in a Thai passport photo?

No. The MFA requires a neutral expression — no smiling, no frowning, mouth closed, no teeth visible. Eyes must be open and looking directly at the camera. Children under 6 are exempt from the strict gaze rule, and infants under 3 may have an open mouth.

How recent does the Thai passport photo need to be?

The photo must have been taken within the last six months and cannot be filtered, retouched, or digitally altered.

What file format and size does the Thai MFA accept?

JPG, JPEG, or PNG, with a maximum file size of **120 KB**. The image must be 35 × 45 mm (413 × 531 px at 300 DPI; 827 × 1063 px at 600 DPI), borderless, color only — no black and white. Print applications require 2 identical photos.

The same checks the authority will run — before you submit.

  • Face height & eye line measured from the pupil midpoint with sub-pixel accuracy, clamped to the tolerance range your authority publishes.
  • Background colour checked across a sampled grid — catches gradients and fringe from poor segmentation (ΔE < 3 against spec).
  • File-size ceiling enforced per-spec — recompressed silently for sub-60 KB e-visa portals, lossless for print.
  • Sharpness & expression guards warn on blur, closed eyes, or non-neutral expressions before you export.
