  • The photo must have no frame or border
  • Print the photo and glue it to the visa application form; a photo pasted digitally is not accepted
  • Do not retouch the photo; posts can reject digitally modified photos

Notes

  • Japan uses the same 35 x 45 mm frame and 32-36 mm head band for the visa as for the passport.
  • The JAPAN eVISA portal states no pixel size. It asks for a photo taken within 6 months against a plain, untextured background with the whole face centred, and the uploaded image must fit the red frame shown on screen.
  • Requirements are applied by the Japanese embassy or consulate handling the application. Some posts, such as the Embassy of Japan in India, list a 45 x 45 mm square photo, and the Consulate-General of Japan in Denver also accepts a 2 x 2 in photo. Check the checklist for your post before submitting.
  • Shoot against a plain white wall in even light so the background needs as little change as possible.

Can I wear glasses for a Japan visa photo?

Glasses with thick frames and sunglasses are not accepted. Removing your glasses is the safest option, especially if they reflect light or hide your eyes.

Can I wear a hat or head covering?

Hats and hairbands are not allowed, and nothing may make it hard to identify you. Check with the embassy or consulate handling your application if you wear a religious or medical head covering.

Can I smile in the photo?

Face the camera without tilting or turning your head and keep a neutral expression so the photo shows your current, easily identifiable appearance.

How recent does the photo need to be?

The photo must be taken within the last 6 months. Do not reuse an older photo.

What size is a Japan visa photo?

35 x 45 mm with the head measuring 32-36 mm from crown to chin. The generated digital output is 413 x 531 px on a white background. Some posts list a 45 x 45 mm or 2 x 2 in photo, so check the checklist for your embassy or consulate.
