Overview

SpecSnap lists two Australia presets: Passport and Citizenship. Their retained 35 × 45 mm / 413 × 531 px references share geometry, but their authorities and application procedures differ. Passport now provides requirements guidance only, without edited generation, preview, application export, payment or printing actions. Citizenship follows its separate Home Affairs guidance.

For passports, the reviewed domestic adult new-application and renewal routes require two unedited prints lodged in person, including forms started online. Photos must be 35–40 mm wide × 45–50 mm high, with a 32–36 mm head height, and less than six months old. Use dye-sublimation printing on glossy paper of at least 200 gsm. The reference pixels and former 2 MB app limit are not authority digital-upload requirements.

Use a plain white or light grey background and even lighting. Do not digitally retouch the photo or change the background. Remove glasses unless the official medical exception applies; children under three have expression exceptions. A professional photo provider is recommended, rather than mandated as for Canada. Check the relevant application checklist for endorsement and guarantor/referee requirements. An original-preserving checker is not available.

Issuing authorities

  • Department of Home Affairs — citizenship application-photo guidance.

Frequently asked questions

How many Australian photo presets does SpecSnap support?

Two: Passport and Citizenship. Passport provides requirements guidance only, without edited generation or export. Citizenship follows separate Home Affairs guidance; do not assume passport policy applies to it.

What size are Australian application photos?

The passport requires prints 35–40 mm wide by 45–50 mm high, with a 32–36 mm head height. Its 35 × 45 mm / 413 × 531 px catalog entry is a reference, not a generated or digital-upload output. Follow the separate citizenship checklist.

Can I reuse a citizenship photo for an Australian passport?

The crop can share the same geometry, but check the passport-specific rules before reuse: an unedited photo less than six months old, glasses removed unless a medical exception applies, and two printed photos. Matching dimensions alone does not establish suitability.

Can I upload a digital photo for an Australian passport?

The reviewed domestic adult new-application and renewal routes require two prints lodged in person, including when the form begins online. Use dye-sublimation printing on glossy paper of at least 200 gsm. There is no published 2 MB JPEG submission ceiling in that guidance.

What should I check before submitting?

For a passport, use an unedited photo, check the six-month recency and print rules, and follow any applicable medical or child exceptions. For citizenship, follow the Home Affairs application checklist. Both need a clear front-facing photo without shadows, filters, or retouching.
